Every number, explained.
Every score you see on ItalyGo comes from exactly one of two places: our members, or a formula we publish in full on this page. Nothing is bought, nothing is imported from anywhere else, and there are no stars — just one honest scale from 0 to 10.
1 · The ItalyGo rating
The badge on every card and place page header (🍋 9/10) is the average of all ItalyGo reviews for that place, on a whole-number 0–10 scale. Each review first averages its own dimensions, then all reviews average together. A place with no reviews shows ❌ No rating — we never invent a number.
| ❌ | 0/10 | No rating yet — not enough information |
| 🏛️ | 1/10 | Italian booth |
| 🍕 | 2/10 | Pizza |
| 🍝 | 3/10 | Pasta |
| ☕ | 4/10 | Espresso |
| 🛵 | 5/10 | Vespa |
| 🍷 | 6/10 | Wine |
| 🤌 | 7/10 | Italian hand gesture |
| 🏛️ | 8/10 | Colosseum |
| 🍋 | 9/10 | Amalfi lemon |
| 🇮🇹 | 10/10 | Italian flag — the highest ItalyGo rating |
2 · User Ratings — scored by members
When someone reviews a place, they score six dimensions 0–10 from their own experience, and answer two questions — What would you recommend here? and What is the vibe? These are shown as raw averages of the reviews: what members rated, exactly as they rated it.
Food Quality0–10
Taste, ingredients, preparation, consistency and execution across the menu.
Weight 2.5× in the index
Italian Identity0–10
Culinary traditions, regional representation and connection to Italian food culture.
Weight 1.5× in the index
Hospitality0–10
Welcome, knowledge, responsiveness and the overall feeling of being looked after.
Weight 1.5× in the index
Atmosphere0–10
Room, comfort, cleanliness, lighting, music and Italian character of the space.
Weight 1× in the index
Value0–10
What guests receive for what they pay — never merely cheapness.
Weight 1× in the index
Character0–10
Signature dishes, unique concept and the reason to visit THIS table.
Weight 0.5× in the index
A dimension nobody has rated yet reads not rated yet — never 0/10. The two questions are aggregated on each place page as What would you recommend here? and What is the vibe?
3 · The Italian Excellence Index (out of 100)
The six User Ratings combine with the two ItalyGo Scores below into one 100-point profile — a picture of strengths and opportunities, never a ranking against other tables. Each dimension is worth 0–10, multiplied by its weight (Food ×2.5, Italian Identity ×1.5, Hospitality ×1.5, Character ×0.5, the rest ×1) for a maximum of 100.
New profile
Guest scores reflect this place's first responses.
Emerging
Early Excellence Index based on 10–49 guest responses.
Established
Excellence Index backed by 50+ guest responses.
Trusted
Deep guest data from 100+ responses.
Confidence tiers describe how much data backs a profile: New (0–9 responses), Emerging (10–49), Established (50–99), Trusted (100+). Level labels like “Excellent” only appear at 50+ responses, and achievements require 5+ reviews — one review can never hand out a badge.
4 · ItalyGo Scores — calculated by ItalyGo
Two dimensions are never rated by users. They are calculated by ItalyGo from profile data and community activity, always out of 10, and always labelled as ours.
Digital Presence/10
One fixed ItalyGo formula: website, online menu, reservations, hours and contact details.
| Website | 4 pts |
| Online menu | 3 pts |
| Reservations | 2 pts |
| Opening hours | 0.5 pts |
| Phone | 0.5 pts |
| Total | 10 pts |
One fixed formula for every venue — the same inputs, the same points, recalculated whenever a profile changes. Owners see exactly which inputs they have and which are still worth points.
Community/10
Reviews, check-ins, likes, shares and saves — measured against every venue on ItalyGo.
| ItalyGo reviews | 30% |
| Check-ins | 25% |
| Likes | 20% |
| Shares | 15% |
| Saves | 10% |
- 1 · Count — every approved review, check-in (👍 “I’ve been here”), like, share and save is counted for every published venue. New interaction types start counting the day they ship.
- 2 · Compare — each metric is log-normalized against every venue in the ItalyGo database (never against a fixed target), so one breakout venue can’t flatten everyone else, and each signal reaches full weight at 10 events.
- 3 · Rescale — the weighted composite is rescaled so the most engaged venue on ItalyGo reads ≈10/10, venues with proportionally less activity read proportionally less, and a venue with zero activity reads exactly 0/10.
The score is recomputed automatically the moment any of that activity happens — a new review, check-in, like or share can move it for every venue at once.
Found something that looks wrong? Ratings come from members’ own experiences and scores from formulas you can read above — if a profile detail is off, tell us and we’ll fix the data, not the number.
